Or like Lucas said below he had a wife but it was a sick relationship, maybe one he’d tried to groom and it wasn’t going well. Maybe she’s the one that crashed the car either trying to kill him or just escape.

I do not think he had a wife. At least not in the traditional sense, his “wife” may have been Mary’s predecessor.
