And it’s nice to know that my hunch was right: a homemade weapon specifically designed to work against the Nightgaunts.

The head was a fake, M’Gann used to make Mera believe she had been killed, so she could infiltrate Atlantis. Otherwise the head would have turned to dust, once she was killed. So by the time Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman arrived to Atlantis, M’gann was posing as an Atlantean.

In retrospect, this should have been immediately obvious to us. It’s already been shown that Nightgaunts crumble to dust when they die. For example, when Katana killed Catwoman, or when Raven lost to Trigon.
